Gavin McKenna made history early in his career. He became the first player from Yukon to be picked first overall in the Western Hockey League bantam draft in 2022 by the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Even though he was given special “exceptional player” status by regional hockey groups, he did not get that status from the WHL itself.

Still, he showed his talent right away by scoring four points in his first WHL game. In his first short season, he scored 18 points in 16 games.

He also played at the prep level with the South Alberta Hockey Academy and scored 75 points in 26 games.
