He passed away on 20 July 2026 . People called him “King Kev” and “Mighty Mouse”. Keegan was famous as an player for his excellent dribbling skills, accurate finishing and strong heading ability.

Keegan starts his professional football career with Scunthorpe United in year 1968. Manager Bill Shankly signed him for Liverpool in the same year.

He won three First Division titles, two UEFA Cups, one FA Cup, and one European Cup at Liverpool. He won the European Cup in his final season with Liverpool.

During this time, Keegan became a regular player for the England national team. He captained England 31 times, including at UEFA Euro 1980.

In 1977, he joined the German club Hamburger SV. He was named European Footballer of the Year in 1978 and 1979.

With Hamburg, he won the Bundesliga title in the 1978–79 season. He also helped the club reach the 1980 European Cup Final.

After leaving Hamburg, Keegan played for Southampton for two seasons. In 1982, he joined Newcastle United, which was then playing in the Second Division.

He helped Newcastle earn promotion to the First Division in his second season. Keegan retired from professional football in 1984.

Scunthorpe United faced many difficulties during Kevin Keegan’s early career. The club could not afford proper football nets, so the team trained on a rugby pitch at Quibell Park.

They also practiced five-a-side football matches on the concrete car park of the Old Show Ground. Keegan was very serious about his training.

He was the second of three children of Joe Keegan and Doris Keegan. His father was originally from Newcastle.

Later, his father moved to Armthorpe, near Doncaster, to work in a coal mine. There, he met and married Doris Keegan.

Kevin Keegan studied at St Peter’s High School in Cantley. His father’s family originally came from Ireland before settling in Newcastle.

Kevin Keegan Personal Life

In September 1970, Kevin Keegan met his future wife, Jean Woodhouse, at the Doncaster Fair. The two met while riding the Waltzers amusement ride.

They got married on 23 September 1974. Kevin and Jean had two daughters. During the 1970s, Keegan became famous for his curly “poodle perm” hairstyle.

His hairstyle was often included in lists of the most unusual hairstyles. In July 2008, Flybe International named one of its Bombardier Q400 aircraft in his honor.
