After graduating from the Yale School of Drama, James Burrows returned to California in 1965. He worked as a dialogue coach on the television series O.K. Crackerby!.
The show starred Burl Ives and was created by his father, Abe Burrows.
Later, Burrows worked as an assistant stage manager for the 1967 play Holly Golightly, which was based on the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Although the play was not successful, it introduced him to actress Mary Tyler Moore. Burrows also worked on the touring production of Cactus Flower and the Broadway play Forty Carats.
He later directed the Broadway play The Castro Complex. During this period, he continued working in theater as a stage manager and director.
