Don Nelson was selected in the first round of the 1962 NBA Draft. The Chicago Zephyrs picked him with the 17th overall selection.
He averaged 6.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in his first season. The team released him after his rookie season. Nelson then joined the Los Angeles Lakers.

Donald Nelson was born on May 15, 1940, in Muskegon, Michigan. His parents were Arvid and Agnes Nelson. He grew up with his parents and two sisters.

Donald Nelson married Joy Wolfgram in June 1991. The wedding took place at the Oakland Coliseum. Donald and Joy had six children from their earlier marriages.
